My way of expressing emotions has always been through writing and photography. Water and nature have always been my comfort zone. Once I dreamt of showing the world what my eyes see. Armed with a digicam and my laptop, now I can!

The Art of Packing Light

October 18, 2009

All of us have experienced in one way another, what it feels to forget something important. A forgotten plane ticket for overseas travel costs so much hassle that it often ruins the mood of the trip. However, in our attempt not to miss anything, we swing to the other side of the spectrum: bringing almost everything. Before we know it, we find ourselves with so much luggage it seems as though we’re relocating rather than having a short trip.

Women are especially prone to over-pack. There is this mistaken notion that since women have special needs, they necessarily should have more things to bring compared to men. If there is one rule in traveling that overshadows all the others, traveling light will definitely be it. This applies to men and women. Any seasoned traveler would advice one to pack smart rather than to pack more. Remember that during the trip, we bring our luggage with us. The heavier our luggage is, the more difficult it is for us to move around. We also become more susceptible to lose things, not to mention that we become a prime target for thievery.

The measure of a good traveler is based on how light he or she packs and anybody would benefit from good travel packing tips. The first tip is to try to fit everything in a single bag. This may sound impossible, but if we really think about it, a short trip is just that – short. It would be ridiculous to expect the full comforts of our homes without bringing our whole house in the process. Remember that the goal of the trip is to enjoy the locale and the scenery. Overseas travel may be relatively uncomfortable, but there lies the adventure. Why don’t we challenge ourselves and see how resourceful we can be.

When choosing things to pack, rather than bringing what might be handy, bring things that we cannot do without: like toiletries or underwear. And even these essentials should be brought in small amounts. Rather than bringing a whole bottle of shampoo for instance, bring just a small container. Don’t worry if it would run out for there is surely a counterpart that could be purchased on our destination. This is especially true for those who travel abroad. The world is getting smaller and many are surprised to find that their Nivea soap is available in other parts of the world as well. Again, bring only what you need and what you would surely use. Scrutinize your things if they are really essential.

Because clothes constitute the bulk of the luggage, it would be best to choose clothes that are made of light and easy to dry materials. Also, rather than bringing a week’s worth of shirts, bring only three and wash them on the way. That way, there is still space for other items like souvenirs that would be purchased on your destination. By following these travel packing tips, we could surely look forward to an adventurous and enjoyable trip.
