Shopping for Your Baby Things
November 11, 2009![]()
The first time I laid my eyes on my firstborn was unforgettable. As soon as I saw her angelic face, I embraced the role of the humbling hands-on mom. I took charge of everything, from deciding whether to breastfeed or not, to choosing the best lightweight strollers and baby walkers. Though this part of shopping; I can say, is far from ordinary, since it involves the safety of my precious one. Shopping malls and even the internet are bursting with hundreds of baby products (baby strollers, booster seats, baby walkers, baby carriers, to name a few) that made me even more confused.
In my quest for the perfect baby things, I have learned and want to share with my fellow moms that the safety and comfort of our little ones comes first. Yes I know, I too was lured a million times to those cute, colorful and fashionable baby carriers (in between those equally adorable feeding bottles and baby strollers) but was disappointed in the end after seeing that my child seemed to develop rashes in her thighs because her carrier did not fit her well and the quality of the cloth used was sub standard.
Fads, I guess are not meant to be of advantage to our little ones. I have learned the hard way that baby carriers should be like my own 2 hands (comfortable and snug), baby strollers should have “breaks” and “stand-by” modes with a wide adjustable cover to protect my baby from sunburn, and baby walkers should help my baby walk and not distract her (some comes with too much music and trinkets that distract the child from the supposed goal) from walking.I can tell that though I was patient in looking for baby things, being a new mom comes with a lot of additional responsibilities which includes the dreaded “burning-the-midnight-oil-shift” just because our baby has decided NOT to sleep and for unknown reasons, has also decided to cry the night out.
It is during these days where shopping will become a luxury and here is where THE WEB will become your refuge. There are sites which aim to “shop” for you like shopwiki.com. All you need are few clicks on your mouse and everything will pop in your screen just like magic! I have tried this and believe me, I shopped while doing the laundry and sterilizing feeding bottles and still had time for my pedicure!
I used to believe that to be a good mom, you need to be a superhero and do everything flawlessly while still looking flawless. But with a 6 month old kid, a home to take care of, a husband who begs of hearty dinners, all this seems to be impossible unless you really are a superhero. I now believe that to be a good mom, I need to find ways and not do everything always, to take care of myself and smile at the end of the day –I did it!
